The 3,1-ton Candelabra
I visited the palace in October 2022 immediately after an extensive refurbishment of the place. (the scaffolding was in the process of being wounded up while I was there).
The price tag of the reconstruction has been 120 million euro. I am aware that we experience inflation these months, but I still think you get a lot for £ 100 million plus.
The family has managed to elevate the rococo palace to its former splendor, including its 3,1-ton candelabra. A weight that demands it is attached, not to the ceiling, but to the roof. Worth remembering if you one day find yourself in the same situation.
By the way, the Liechtenstein family owns the Garden Palace Liechtenstein in Vienna as well. One can never have too many palaces.
The Family's Private Museum
During the visit I was shown the family’s private museum, not open to the public, but the doors will be unlocked for us during our evening.
They are not too keen on having photos taken of the collection, so you have to settle for the above photo showing the 2nd floor of the palace, which leads directly into the museum.
If you want to see the museum all by yourself – as some prefer – that can be arranged for 2,900 euro. Just let us know.
The Palace's Concert Hall
At the end of September 2022, Parnassos.dk invited its guests to the Esterházy palace, about 30 miles from Vienna. This was where the composer, Joseph Haydn, lived and worked for three decades. At the nearby city, Eisenstadt, you will find one of the finest music conservatories. For the occasion, we had hired their Esterházy-quartet, who, for an hour played music by Haydn. We were all enthralled by this fine ensemble.
The Esterházy Quartet
The quartet has promised to play for us again at the Stadtpalais’ concert hall for our evening. As it is close to Halloween proper, they will play works of a ‘ghostly’ character – no shortage of this in the music repertoire of the 19th century. Nice to have this century represented as well.
The concert hall has two candelabras, weighing 1 ton each. I am unsure if they are fastened to the roof as well.
There is space for 100 guests in the hall. For security and insurance reasons, this is also the maximum we can invite to our evening.
Drag Show, Banquet and Bar
And what is a drag show without cocktails? After the dinner a bar will serve and sell drinks, wines etc at cost price, well below the price you pay in an ordinary bar.
All in all, it is our assessment that you will not have a more surreal experience in 2023.
Friday evening is also the opening shot to our extended weekend in Vienna, the parting shot being the Halloween dinner in the casemates of yet another palace, Palais Coburg.

Our purpose is to tear us away from our day to day lives, to ensure that when you are back home again, you will ask yourself, ‘did I really experience what I think I experienced’?
